Getting older, I have decided, is a gift. I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my blessed life, my family, for less grey hair or a flatter stomach. As I have aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of me. I have become my own friend. I no longer scold myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying something that to others may seem silly. If I want it and I can afford it, it is my choice, and who cares what others think. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with getting older, aging. It is no one’s business if I choose to read or play on my computer until 4 a.m. and sleep until noon, or later. I will dance with myself to some of my favorite old songs or some new unfamiliar tune that catches my ear, and if I wish to weep over a “lost” love…..I will. I have walked on the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging belly, and I have dived into the waves with total abandonment of the pitying glances of the “beautiful” people that look so good in their bikini or trunks. They, too, will get old. I believe, that I am sometimes forgetful, but then again, some of my life is just as well forgotten. I eventually remember the important things. Yes, over the years, my heart has been “broken”.
