Yahoo Dating Service Taken Over by Match.com

Apparently one of the largest dating internet sites, Match.com, said just this past Monday that it will become Yahoo’s online dating site. It will be replacing Yahoo’s own Yahoo Personals brand. Financial terms and the exact length of this deal have not yet been disclosed.

Recently Yahoo has been trying to focus on creating some kind of licensing content and selling online advertising. They have also been forging partnerships with other companies to run some of their other services. On Monday, Yahoo said that Nokia Corp, which is the world’s largest cell phone maker, will run maps and navigation services for Yahoo on phones, as well as on computers.

Match.com said that users of the Yahoo Personals dating service can switch over to the co-branded March.com on Yahoo during the next 60 days. The CEO of Match.com, Greg Blatt, recently said that this is a great deal for Match.com. He also said that online dating is a pretty interesting thing. A site’s users are, in many ways, part of their product. The more and better users that a site has, the better experience they are going to deliver.

In the first quarter of this year, IAC’s Match unit, which does include Match.com, among other dating sites, had a total of 1.6 million paid users. IAC does not break down the figures by service. Yahoo has not yet disclosed the number of Yahoo Personals users that it has.

In light of this news, IAC shares rose by 82 cents or 3.8 percent to $22.30 in afternoon trading. Shares for Yahoo also increase by 28 cents to $15.76.
