Cynthia Nixon started dating Christine Marinoni back in 2004. This took place after Nixon broke up with her companion of 16 years, Danny Mozes. Nixon also made note that when people got wind that she was dating a girl, she came right out and said that it was true.
During the same time, California had legalized gay marriage, but that law was struck down in the November 2008 election. Nixon had told people that, in an ideal world, they would like to get married in New York when it becomes legalized. The rally was a cry to help get the process of legalizing same sex marriages in New York quicker.
