Although it may not have been true at one time, dating sites are now reaching out to a group of people that may have considered themselves as the stereotypical dating age. However, thanks to sites like seniormatch.com, online dating is now starting to change the demographic to include much older people than what they did before.
Most online dating sites normally work by charging users a fee for a certain time period. During this time they can create a profile with information about themselves that other users can view. Users are frequently able to send messages to one another and some even allow for video chat. However, this new world of cyber matchmaking is starting to gain some ground with older men and women, many of which may have never used a computer in the first place.
Some online dating sites, like Match.com, have just recently listed the 50 and above age range as their fastest growing demographic. They say that this section of the site has been increasing by about 15 percent each year starting way back in 2005.
A spokeswomen for Match.com, Amy Canaday, said that it’s a good way to expand peoples’ options and try something different. She went on to say that people in that age range often have friends who are married with kids of their own. This puts a dent in common ground and often causes the single people to feel left out.
Some experts have gone on to blame other factors for the increased interest in the 50 and over section of dating sites. They go on to say that fads come and go, and right now a big fad with younger men is dating older women. These women, who have been nicknamed cougars, enjoy dating younger men. Dating sites are now becoming an area for these kinds of people to meet.
