True.com, an internet-based dating site, is ordered to pay back $1.5 million in refunds to people who were charged fees after canceling their memberships. Under the agreement that True.com accepted last Friday, people who had been wrongfully charged after canceling their memberships will be compensated. This includes people who have been wrongfully charged all the way back to 2003.
The federal lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of Texas. However, before the refund process can start, the agreement still has to be approved by U.S. District Judge David C. Godbey.
Some members had been charged up to three times by True.com after the cancellation of their membership. Many people were still charged the monthly fee after canceling their service. True.com charges customers $49.99 per month to use their only dating service for single men and women.
The settlement that True.com agreed to also states that the online-based company must revise their whole auto subscription system. This will help to avoid future people from being accidentally charged as well.
People who are eligible for this refund will be identified and referred to a website for payment. Any member who was charged one month after canceling will receive $35. People who were charged for more than two months will be able to receive $50. Others will also be given a free 45-day membership to True.com.
As of now, more than 150,000 people are expected to get some kind of refund. However, this number could grow by the time the agreement is finalized. Although True.com was believed to have a strong defense against these allegations, the company choose to settle the lawsuit to be more economical. Both sides are happy with the settlement that was reached.
