What not to cook on a date

You have decided she is worth it. She is worth the effort of a home cooked meal. And it’s not just because you would like to get lucky, it’s because you really like her and want to impress. Problem is you can’t serve her last night’s pizza or cheese on toast. You need to think about this. Plan, shop, read, cook – you have to become Jamie Oliver in the kitchen.

There are a few meals you need to stay away from though – they are just setting yourself up for disaster.

•    Seafood – not because it’s not nice but because people are rarely intolerant to seafood they are allergic. Like they can DIE allergic. So steer clear of anything fishy or sauces containing fish. Mouth to mouth is only hot if both people are alive.

Tempting - but not if it can kill you
Seafood and allergies - sometimes don’t mix…

•    First-time meals – go with what you know. Do not go out and buy Nigella’s latest masterpiece and try and recreate some obscure meal that involves ingredients you have never heard of prepared in ways you can not pronounce. Simple is better. And if you really HAVE to make THAT meal then practice it on your sister or neighbor or something. Just not your mom – she will be so overwhelmed by the fact that you can cook she wont care what it tastes like.

Stick with what you know!!

•    Garlic and raw onions. Girls don’t like their breathe to smell. They may love mussels in garlic sauce but will not eat it on a date or a day before the date. They just do not do it. Also it makes it a tad awkward when to comes to good night kiss time. You don’t want to be all smelly.

Nice? For sure. Smelly? Without a doubt!

•    Exotic meals are also a tad risky. While you may know how to prepare them if she isn’t sure what it is or how to eat it it may not go down so well with her. Could be cool for a second home cooked meal but again keep it simple for the first meal.

Stick with what you know!!!

•    Curry – I love a good curry but can not eat it too hot. I can’t. I have tried. So while you may think it’s mild, her cute little taste buds are being burnt right off and she is not feeling very appreciative.

Mmmmm - quick, eat it before it melts the plate!

•    Frozen meals or ready made meals from Woolies. Seriously she will KNOW. Even if you put it in a pretty serving bowl – she will know! And that’s all you need to know!

Frozen meals? Not from Iceland!!

•    BigMac and cheese. This is the most ideal single person meal. Its quick and its yum. It is not, however, a date night meal! Not even if you add bacon or ham.

Not date food. Not at all. Unless your 11 years old

•    Take note of anything she may be allergic too. Maybe even ask her at some point just to make sure. I have allergies and it is tricky but it’s the guys who make the effort to check with the restaurant or make a meal devoid of anything that may make me ill, who are the first to the finish line.

There are food channels that offer practical tips (and possible even YouTube). So do your homework. Make the effort and I guarantee she will appreciate the effort.
