Blind dates – are they ever good

September 22nd, 2009 Written by Laura Murray

I have been on one proper blind date. I didn’t know the guy from Adam (whoever Adam is!). It was a spur of the moment thing and before we knew it, we were behaving inappropriately at the restaurant we had dinner at- It was great fun!

Only sometimes, first dates go really, really well!

So my experience of blind dates is pretty good

But, all that aside I still do think that there is lots to be said for blind dates. I like a little bit of excitement and adventure, and what is more exciting and adventurous that meeting up with a person you know nothing about. It’s sort of like buying a kinder surprise – you may get the cool toy or you may get the crappy crocodile thing!

But then, they can go really bad as well.

So what makes a blind date a good idea?

Well for one the excitement. There is an adrenalin rush that comes with any first date and when it’s a blind date it is just heightened. Wondering what he will look like. What he will sound like. What he will smell like. All that builds the excitement. Even if it turns out that he is a total dud – the build up is always worth it.

Then there is the whole randomness of it all and the idea that you may actually hit it off. There really is no expectation. You don’t know each other; one of you is probably doing it as a favor for a friend so aren’t expecting it to work out. And that in itself actually makes for a pretty positive start. No one is going to get let down because you expect nothing.

Keep your expectations low!

There is also a 50/50 chance that you guys click and end up, like I did, being asked to leave the restaurant for fear you may start removing clothes in public.

But there is a 50/50 chance that it is totally horrible. You don’t know each other so may choose a totally inappropriate restaurant. He may be thinking a romantic dinner and book and some swanky restaurant. You could be thinking casual pub dinner and arrive wearing jeans.

He could be totally aweful looking but be totally enamoured with you and ask you for a second date. Which could present a problem since it’s your bosses son and you really need to keep your job.

If it ends likes this, it may not have gone well!

Either way though I think blind dates are cool. Its like Forest Gumps’ “life is like a box of chocolate” saying. “You never know what you’re gonna get”
